Potty-training attempts

You want me to do what?

With the baby on her way we (mainly me) would really like it for Carson to be potty trained. All of his friends are and I like to think that he is just a bright as they. We have had the Elmo potty for some time now and Eric and Robin bought him a potty training DVD for his birthday that he enjoys watching...let me tell you it is very educational teaching every possible replacement word for "poop" and "pee."

Now I know he knows "the sensation" as they call it because he tells us when he is going to the bathroom and if he goes poop he will come get us and guide us to his room so that we can change him asap so he get his play on.

A few weeks ago we went and bout some big-boy underwear. He got to pick and chose a variety of his favorites; he has Wall-e, Thomas, Cars, Mickey, and Buzz but they have all gotten peed on.

He will sit on the chair for what seems like hours while I try to distract him from getting up by reading, singing songs, playing with toys, and finally bribing with candy. After one particularly long sit I set the timer for 20 minutes at which point he was to try again. Two minutes before the timer went off, right after I asked him if he had to go mind you, he peed his pants. The same day, we drove a short distance to Mimi's to drop something off and promptly after arriving attempted to sit on her toilet...he wasn't having it and I discovered yellow socks and few minutes later...yellow socks people, super gross!

Since that day when he went through too many underwear to count I gave up. Now I know patience is not my strength but it didn't seem like he was interested. When he is asked now if he wants to sit on the potty, he adamantly says, "NO!" and he seems quite content (and might I mention adorable) to do his thing in his diaper.

I may have given up for now but we will conquer this...I hope!

Tiffani,

You might have to wait a while before you try again, but while you are waiting read the book "Potty Training in Less than a Day". I used the method 5 times with great results.

Oh, I have to say that is a hard task to do... it's never an easy one! Don't worry... you'll get there soon enough! :)

After potty training two boys I have learned that you have to wait until he is ready to do it. Then it will happen really quick!

Please, when you find the trick, do tell! Jordyn potty trained easily, Jadyn on the other hand tells me "No" but wants to wear panties and go to school. Not sure what to do.

I have to agree with the others...he will do it when he is ready. As parents, we are often ready before our little ones. As you probably remember, Grant was close to 4 and sooooooo hard. But..once he got it, it took no time at all. The hard thing about doing it before the baby comes is that they often regress anyways. Take your time!!!

We are going through the SAME thing! Just consider yourself lucky that you have a stubborn boy who doesn't give in to peer pressure! :) Right now Kaleb asks to go potty about once a day, and wants to wear undies. So I tell him if he can stay dry in his diaper and tell me he needs to go, then after so long he can wear undies. But I've just got to the point where I don't push it at all. If it's his idea great, and of course I praise when he does go in the potty. And during diaper changes I talk about how bog kids go in the potty and use examples of people he knows that go in the potty. Can't say that it has worked yet, but maybe one day it'll click!

I don't have any advise for you, but when you find that trick, let me know how you did it! I will have to go through the same thing pretty soon. I heard that it's a lot easier when s/he is ready to do it. But than every kid is different, so Good luck with that!

Tiff, my take on potty training is that I'm ready when their ready. who cares if all of his friends are already potty trained? When the baby comes if he is not able to go to the bathroom by him self you are going to be pulling your hair out trying to rush to his aid every half hour when he needs to go. And trust me it will be every half hour because he know's it's a sure fire way to get one on one face time with mommy. Until my children are able to pull thier pants up and down on thier own I don't even try. I let them wear pull ups to get familiar with the feeling and make them uncomfortable and want out of thier dirty doings. But, I find it easier to change two diapers then to rush to the nearest potty with a baby in tow and attempt to undo pants and remove a diaper lift on to toilet wait patiently and then repeat in reverse. Just my impute. good luck!
