In order to keep from getting pasty white during the winter months I, like many of you have embraced sunless tanning lotions. I myself have used Jergens for the last three years and a couple of weeks ago my legs started to itch uncontrollably accompanied by a unpleasant burning sensation, they hurt real bad. I already know that my skin is sensitive to soap, shaving cream, detergents, etc. but I hadn't tried any new products. Then I realized that it was the tanning lotion---not the miracle glow maker! Interestingly enough, my arms aren't bothered, just my legs.
My personal diagnosis is that I must be allergic to the ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHE). DHE is a colorless sugar that interacts with dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. As the sugar interacts witht he dead skin cells, a color change occur-like magic! Well, nothing magical is happening on my legs except exerting amazing amount of self control to resist scratching my legs to death.
This is where YOU come in...besides Jergens what self tanning products have you used that have worked. I am willing to try anything so nothing is far-fetched.
Gimme what you got!

did you try the dove brand? I know it didn't irrate my skin. I can't think of what it is called though but it is by Dove.
ps love that you're putting all you're new knowledge to work!
I use the Clinique Tanning Lotion. It's not a daily use thing, but I like it a lot. It doesn't make my legs super orange or anything. At least I don't think they do. Did my legs look orange today?
I love Loreal Sublime Bronze in Medium/Deep. I use it on my face and chest every day after I get out of the shower before my moisturizer. Never have had a streak once. Oh I like the gel but they have a tinted cream too. I never could use the Jergens because I hated the smell...
Good luck!!!
I love the vaseline intensive care for an every day tan lotion and I LOVE the body shops tanner.
and....I love the scientific explanation of fake tanning!
Thanks for all the suggestions, you all have great color so I will have to see wich one isn't irriataing to me!
P.S. Laura, your legs certainly didn't look orange...if you wer looking like an oompa loopma I would tell you.
I'm sorry to hear that you are allergic to stuff. You are a lot like me. I can't use scented lotion or soap because I am apparently allergic to them. I don't know what is in them but I break out in rash=( Good luck with finding the one you like;)
